Prototype Approval for Franchise and Multi-Location Sign Programs

A franchise sign prototype should test the decisions that will be repeated across the program. Choose a representative construction and define what approval will release. A logo sample that confirms color does not automatically approve every site’s dimensions, mounting arrangement or electrical interface.

Select a prototype that exposes the difficult details

Include critical strokes, joins, finishes and illumination effects. If the program contains several constructions, decide whether one first article can represent them or whether separate samples are needed. Document the limits of the selected prototype.

Review it with the right participants

Brand teams assess appearance; production and installation teams assess how the system is built and handled. Use the planned viewing conditions and review access, labels and packaging where they are part of the rollout standard. Capture decisions in one approval record rather than scattered comments.

Resolve changes before releasing repeats

List corrections, accepted exceptions and items still awaiting review. Require revised evidence for affected features. Attach the final drawing and material references to the approved prototype so subsequent factories or batches cannot reproduce an earlier development version.

Keep site adaptation outside the sample approval

The approved standard still needs location-specific dimensions and interfaces. Use a site variation sheet to show departures and identify when a change requires another sample. Record the effective batch for any update to the program standard.

Buyer review checklist

  • Prototype purpose and limits
  • Representative construction details
  • Brand and installation review
  • Closed correction list
  • Controlled drawing and sample
  • Site variation approval process

Should every franchise location receive a new prototype?

Not necessarily. Reuse a controlled reference where the construction remains representative, and review material changes or new interfaces before applying it to a different condition.
