Illumination Testing for LED Signs: Uniformity, Color and Function

An illumination review should assess the complete sign under documented conditions. LED modules that turn on successfully can still produce a face with visible hot spots, dark corners or a halo that changes with the wall surface. Compare the assembled result with the approved intent.

Control the setup before judging the result

Record the supply arrangement, control setting, background and ambient lighting. Allow the setup to reach the agreed inspection condition. Use the intended face or backing material and representative spacing where possible. A halo photographed against a pale workshop wall may look different on a textured dark facade.

Look for location-specific defects

Inspect narrow strokes, corners, joins and transitions between sections. Compare neighboring letters and separate parts of the same logo. Note whether an uneven area follows the artwork geometry, face material, module layout or a wiring branch. This gives the production team a specific issue to investigate.

Review color and dimming with the actual system

Agree a visual reference for illuminated color and include the intended control equipment when dimming is part of the order. Record settings when comparing samples. Phone camera exposure and white balance can change the apparent result, so use images as inspection evidence with context rather than treating pixel colors as measured sign output.

Define the acceptance evidence

A buyer may need an overview, close views of critical areas and a short functional demonstration. State what was tested and identify the unit. If measured brightness or color tolerances are part of the purchase, agree the instruments, method and limits in advance instead of inferring them from a photograph.

Buyer review checklist

  • Complete assembly and correct supply
  • Background and viewing conditions
  • Corners, narrow strokes and joins
  • Color reference and control setting
  • Identified images or measurements
  • Corrections and recheck result

Does a bright photograph prove uniform illumination?

No. Overexposure can hide variation. Ask for representative exposure and closer views, or agree a measurement method where uniformity is a specified acceptance criterion.
