How Large Pylon Signs Are Sectioned and Packed for International Shipping

Sectioning a large pylon sign can make transport and handling practical, but every shipping joint creates an installation interface. The split locations should be coordinated before fabrication, not improvised after the completed sign is found to exceed the shipping envelope.

Define the transport and handling envelope

Confirm packed dimensions, destination access and how the consignee can unload and move each section. Include protective packaging in the calculation. A section that fits a vehicle may still be difficult to move through the site or lift into its final position.

Coordinate joints with appearance and structure

Show where each section separates and how it reconnects. Review visible seams, alignment, access to connections and the approved structural arrangement. Where illumination crosses a split, identify how electrical interfaces and cable protection will be managed by the responsible parties.

Number sections and pack the assembly logic

Use the same section identifiers on drawings, components, cartons and the packing list. Keep the relevant hardware with its assigned assembly group, while protecting finished surfaces from loose metal parts. Provide a sequence that explains which items should be unpacked first.

Check a trial assembly before closing the crate

Where trial fitting is part of the agreed scope, record alignment and connection access before packing. Photograph the packed arrangement and list loose accessories. Make clear which site tools, lifting equipment and consumables are outside the factory shipment.

Buyer review checklist

  • Packed envelope and receiving constraints
  • Approved split locations and joint details
  • Section IDs on drawings and packages
  • Hardware allocation and accessory count
  • Electrical interface and local connection scope
  • Unpacking and site assembly references

Should every large sign be split into equal sections?

No. Joint position depends on structure, graphics, service access, transport and installation sequence. Equal dimensions may be convenient for packing but unsuitable for the completed sign.
