Where Should an LED Sign Power Supply Be Located?

An LED sign power supply needs a location that is compatible with its instructions, accessible for service and coordinated with the cable route. Hiding it behind a finished wall may solve a visual problem while creating a maintenance problem. Agree the location before wall finishes and sign fabrication are released.

Put access on the drawing

Show the intended enclosure, access opening and route for removing the unit. Confirm that a technician can identify the relevant supply and reach connections without dismantling unrelated finishes. A ceiling void is useful only if the actual position remains accessible after other services are installed.

Check the environment against the selected model

MEAN WELL’s manual calls for ventilation and attention to mounting orientation, ambient temperature and model-specific derating. It also places conditions on rain exposure for certain rated products. Check the exact supply instructions instead of treating an IP number as blanket permission for any outdoor location.

Coordinate supply position and cable length

A remote power location changes the DC cable run. Ask the electrical designer to review branch loading and voltage drop using the actual components and route. Moving a supply after fabrication may require revised wiring information; it is not merely a cosmetic adjustment.

Keep boundaries and identification clear

State which components the factory supplies and which enclosure, wiring or connection work belongs to the local team. Mark the power location and sign identifier in the handover record. Mains connection, isolation and verification should be handled by appropriately qualified local personnel.

Can the power supply sit inside the sign?

Possibly, if the construction, environment, access and product instructions support it. Evaluate the complete arrangement rather than assuming internal or remote placement is always preferable.
