Managing Location Variations Without Losing Sign Standards
Location variations should be recorded as deliberate adaptations of a sign standard. Different fascia sizes, walls, cable routes and local approval conditions can require different interfaces even when the visible brand remains consistent. A site matrix makes those differences visible before orders reach production.
Collect comparable site inputs
Use the same survey fields for each location: available sign area, dimensions, wall construction, photographs, power information and installation restrictions. Identify uncertain measurements. A complete-looking spreadsheet is not reliable if values were copied from another site without verification.
Classify each variation by its effect
Separate appearance changes from construction and installation changes. Resizing can affect stroke details and the illumination arrangement; moving a cable exit can affect only the interface. State the consequence so the relevant designer or approver can review it.

Release a distinct package for each site
Give every site a code and approved drawing revision. Reference the master standard plus the specific departures, rather than duplicating an entire uncontrolled document set. Confirm that the purchase order and production schedule use the same site identifiers.
Prevent exceptions from becoming defaults
An accepted variation should state where it applies. If it becomes a new program option, update the master deliberately and explain when it takes effect. Keep as-built site records so later replacement orders use the configuration actually installed.
Buyer review checklist
- Consistent survey fields
- Verified site dimensions
- Variation type and effect
- Approved site drawing
- Limited scope of exceptions
- As-built replacement reference
Can the factory scale one approved drawing for all locations?
Only where the resulting construction and interfaces remain valid and are approved. Scaling can change details that need a new review.
