Production Drawings vs Design Proofs: What Changes Before Fabrication?
A design proof and a production drawing answer different questions. The proof helps approve the intended appearance. The production drawing defines how the agreed sign will be made and connected to its surroundings. Both can be necessary, but approval of one does not automatically approve the other.
Use the design proof to settle visible intent
Review wording, logo proportions, arrangement, color references and the sign’s relationship to the surrounding architecture. Identify whether depicted materials and lighting effects are illustrative. A perspective image should not be used as a substitute for controlled dimensions.
Use the production drawing to settle physical construction
Confirm materials, thicknesses or depths, assembly details, fixing positions, cable exits and maintenance access. Relevant sections explain relationships that cannot be seen in the proof. Record supplied hardware and any components that another party must provide.

Trace changes between the two documents
A visual change can affect fabrication. A narrower stroke may alter lighting space; a deeper letter can affect stand-off or mounting. When artwork changes, review its construction consequences and issue a corresponding production revision instead of changing only the presentation file.
Approve the correct release status
Mark whether a document is for comment, appearance approval or manufacturing release. Keep superseded versions outside the active production package. Where site or electrical information remains unresolved, record the open item and the person responsible for closing it.
Buyer review checklist
- Appearance approval separated from production release
- Controlled dimensions available
- Material and section details coordinated
- Artwork changes reviewed for construction impact
- Unresolved interfaces recorded
- Superseded files clearly excluded
Can a single document serve both purposes?
Yes, when it clearly contains both the appearance information and the necessary construction details. The approval status must still state what the buyer is authorizing.
