Sign Shop Drawings: What a Custom Sign Manufacturer Should Provide
Sign shop drawings turn a visual idea into dimensions, construction and installation references. Understand what the drawing includes and which site details still need confirmation before approving production.
Identify the drawing package and its purpose
Separate presentation artwork, production drawings, mounting templates and installer references. State which documents are included in the quotation and which require information from the buyer or local professionals. A rendering can communicate appearance while leaving construction unresolved.
Show the interfaces that affect fabrication
Include overall geometry, important sections, material and finish references, attachment arrangements and access requirements. For illuminated signs, coordinate cable exits, power-component locations and the electrical information needed from the destination team.

Make open items and exclusions visible
Use notes to identify unconfirmed site dimensions, buyer-supplied components and local installation scope. An approval should not silently convert unknown wall conditions into factory assumptions. If structural calculations or permit submissions are required, name the responsible party and deliverable.
Control revision and release
Give each drawing a revision and an approval status. Record changes to geometry, materials or interfaces before production starts. The approved manufacturing reference should be the same version used for inspection and handover, with later site variations separately documented.
For example, an elevation can show the logo correctly while leaving its fixing or cable exit undecided. Mark those items as open rather than treating visual approval as construction approval. Close the relevant decisions and identify the production revision so the factory and installer use the same information.
Buyer review checklist
- Document list and drawing purpose
- Dimensioned elevations and relevant sections
- Material and finish references
- Mounting, wiring and service interfaces
- Open items and scope exclusions
- Revision, approval and release status
Are shop drawings the same as permit drawings?
Not automatically. A manufacturing drawing describes the supplied sign. Permit or structural submissions may require additional work by qualified local professionals, depending on the project.
