Outdoor Sign Materials: What Lasts in Rain and Heat

Stainless steel, aluminum, acrylic and LED modules each perform differently in harsh weather. A practical comparison for outdoor storefront and building signs.

Outdoor signs face rain, UV radiation, temperature swings and salt air. Here's how common materials hold up.

Stainless Steel

Best for outdoor durability. Brushed or mirror finish available. Resists rust and corrosion for 10+ years. Standard grade is 304; use 316 for coastal areas with salt air.

Aluminum

Lighter and cheaper than stainless steel. Powder-coated aluminum is standard for channel letter returns. Does not rust but can oxidize — powder coating prevents this.

Acrylic Face

UV-printed acrylic resists fading for 3-5 years outdoors. For permanent outdoor installations, ask about UV-resistant acrylic (5-7 year color retention).

LED Modules

Quality LED modules are IP65 rated for outdoor use. Cheap modules yellow out within 1-2 years. We use name-brand LED modules with 50,000-hour rated lifespan.

Mounting Hardware

Use stainless steel standoffs and screws for outdoor installation. Zinc-plated hardware rusts within 2-3 years in humid climates.
